HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $ 1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

LG will use the operating software, used in now-defunct Palm smartphones years ago, for its “smart” or Internet-connected TVs. The Asian electronics company had worked with HP on WebOS before offering to buy it outright.

Under the terms of their agreement, LG acquires the operating software’s source code, associated documentation, engineering talent, various associated websites, and licenses under HP’s intellectual property including patents covering fundamental operating system and user interface technology.

HP will retain the patents and all the technology relating to the cloud service of webOS, HP Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte said in an interview.

“As we looked at it, we saw a very compelling IP that was very unique in the marketplace,” he said, adding that HP has already had a partnership with LG on webOS before the deal was announced.

“As a result of this collaboration, LG offered to acquire the webOS operating system technology,” Veghte said.

Skott Ahn, President and CTO, LG Electronics, said the company will incorporate the operating system in the Smart TV line-up first “and then hopefully all the other devices in the future.”

Both companies declined to reveal the terms of the deal.

LG will keep the WebOS team in Silicon Valley and, for now, will continue to be based out of HP offices, Ahn said.

HP opened its webOS mobile operating system to developers and companies in 2012 after trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, one of the pioneers of the smartphone industry.

The company had tried to build products based on webOS with the now-defunct TouchPad tablet its flagship product.

HP launched and discontinued the TouchPad in 2010, a little over a month after it hit store shelves with costly fanfare after it saw poor demand for a tablet priced on par with Apple’s dominant iPad.

WebOS is widely viewed as a strong mobile platform, but has been assailed for its paucity of applications, an important consideration while choosing a mobile device.

EADS, ThyssenKrupp attacked by Chinese hackers: report

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Airbus parent EADS and German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp recorded major attacks by Chinese hackers in 2012, German magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing unidentified people within the two companies.

That is a trend seen throughout the German economy, where companies are increasingly being attacked by Chinese hackers, the magazine said, citing information from the German government.

A spokesman for EADS told Reuters the attacks were “standard attacks” and the company was working closely with government authorities on the issue of cyber security.

ThyssenKrupp also confirmed an attack, saying it took place in the United States from a Chinese internet address and that it had no information as to what data the attackers obtained, according to Der Spiegel.

ThyssenKrupp was not immediately available for comment when tried by Reuters. The Chinese embassy in Berlin and the German economy ministry were also not immediately available to comment.

When confronted with similar accusations in the past, China’s Defence Ministry has issued a flat denial and said hacking is a global problem and that China is one of world’s biggest victims of cyber assaults.

Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution recorded almost 1,100 digital attacks from foreign secret services in 2012, mostly targeted on politicians involved with energy and finance, Der Spiegel said.

Chinese hackers tend to take aim at the largest corporations and most innovative technology companies, using trick emails that appear to come from trusted colleagues but bear attachments tainted with viruses, spyware and other malicious software, according to Western cyber investigators.

Sorry, but there’s no defense for the Chromebook Pixel

I had originally decided not to write about how ridiculous Google’s (GOOG) Chromebook Pixel pricing was on Thursday because I figured it was so self-evident that I’d just be repeating what everyone else was already saying. But today I’ve found two contrarian pieces, one from Quartz and one from ZDNet, that make the case that the Chromebook Pixel actually is a brilliant move on Google’s part even if nobody actually ends up buying it. While both pieces do their best to paint a happy picture of the Chromebook Pixel, they both neglect to mention that Google’s strategy with the Pixel seems to fly in the face of everything it’s been trying to accomplish not only with Chromebooks, but with consumer electronics as a whole.

[More from BGR: iPhone found to be 300% more reliable than Samsung smartphones]

Before I go any further, let me say that I’ve long been a fan of Google’s approach to consumer electronics. I like the fact that the company not only opened up the smartphone market to several new manufacturers with its open-source Android platform, but that it also set the bar for low-cost Android tablets with the Nexus 7, which showed that inexpensive Android tablets don’t have to feel cheap. And until this week, I was a big fan of the Chromebook concept: There’s something very appealing about a bare-bones $ 250 laptop that relies on the cloud to store and deliver data and that comes free of the bloatware that has long plagued many Windows laptops.

[More from BGR: Leaked cases may reveal Galaxy S IV design]

All of which makes Google’s strategy with the Chromebook Pixel that much more baffling.

The whole point of Chromebooks is that they’re cheap laptop substitutes for people who just need a computer capable of surfing the web and not much else. Why would anyone pay $ 1,300 or more for a Chromebook that doesn’t differ much more functionality-wise from a Chromebook that costs $ 1,000 less?

As Quartz’s Christopher Mims acknowledges, the Chromebook Pixel’s “only tool” is “a web browser, through which you do all your work using web-based software, with all your files stored in the cloud.” In other words, it’s like all the other Chromebooks except it has a top-notch display and a faster processor, two things that aren’t all that necessary to perform the tasks that most people will use Chromebooks for.

In fact, the Chrome Pixel’s value proposition is so flat-out absurd that it has given me a whole new appreciation for personal computers, warts and all. Because when I’m editing a short movie for a presentation or playing Skyrim or basically doing anything that’s more sophisticated than surfing the web and sending email, I need a PC. And if I’m going to spend $ 1,300 on a computer, I can find things that deliver a lot more value than a web browser with a pretty screen.

The end of unlimited BBM could erode BlackBerry’s standing in emerging markets

South Africa has been one of BlackBerry’s (BBRY) key markets globally and the Canadian vendor has held more than 50% of the smartphone market there for years. As the BlackBerry Z10 now rolls out in South Africa, the country will be a key testing ground for a potentially controversial development. Local mobile operators will no longer offer unlimited BlackBerry Messenger service after May 31st, just three months after the Z10 debuts in South Africa.

[More from BGR: Sorry, but there’s no defense for the Chromebook Pixel]

This is perfectly understandable, because the new version of BBM offers advanced IP-based features such as voice and video sharing, which are likely to turn into data hogs. The unlimited internet access that has been a popular part of BlackBerry package deals in emerging markets has fostered heavy data volume growth. It is now being phased out by South African carriers. Things like BBM Voice and BBM Screen Sharing are completely excluded from Vodacom’s Unlimited BBM offer and file-sharing is capped.

[More from BGR: iPhone found to be 300% more reliable than Samsung smartphones]

The decision of MTN and Vodacom to discontinue unlimited BBM service has already triggered some angry responses in South Africa. Unlimited BBM has a unique role in emerging markets, where consumers often have strictly limited or no landline email access. It has become a pivotal middle-class electronic communications channel from South Africa to Nigeria to Indonesia to Malaysia. The big question now is how the revamp of the BBM service will be perceived in these markets.

Will all operators simply phase out unlimited BBM? And how will they price pieces like video and voice? A lot is now riding how BlackBerry frames the transition and how well it communicates the pricing structure changes to users.

Right now, the South African tech media is saying that “unlimited BBM will end in May,” which is not a good framing for the company. New BBM features like voice and video will be of limited benefit to BlackBerry if they are perceived to be costly extras instead of integral parts of the BBM service. The situation is particularly volatile because IP-based, cross-platform messaging services like WhatsApp and 2Go have made major gains in Africa over the past year.

NZ’s Telecom lowers profit guidance, sees job cuts

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – New Zealand’s Telecom Corp Ltd lowered its earnings guidance for the year and warned of hundreds of job cuts as the country’s biggest telecommunications company struggles to compete on broadband pricing and in its business operations.

The top-10 firm warned that ongoing restructuring would result in more job losses down the line and could see full-year adjusted earnings come in at NZ$ 1.04 billion to NZ$ 1.06 billion, lower than its previous forecast of flat to a low single-digit percentage fall from NZ$ 1.09 billion in 2012.

“It is pretty apparent that it will be well into the hundreds (of staff cuts) over the next few months,” Telecom Chief Executive Officer Simon Moutter told reporters, adding that it would announce details in May.

The job losses would follow roughly 350 cuts to date.

The top-10 firm’s adjusted net profit was NZ$ 162 million, slightly higher than market expectations as growth in its mobile business offset low margins on its broadband price plans, while fixed-line businesses also suffered.

Forecasts had been for profits of NZ$ 157 million, according to a Reuters poll of three analysts.

Profits were significantly down from NZ$ 240 million in 2012, reflecting significant one-off gains made last year from its demerger in late 2011, when it split off its fixed-line network operations into Chorus Ltd.

Telecom offers retail fixed-line and Internet services, using Chorus’s network but sells mobile services using the network infrastructure it retained.

It announced a dividend of 8 cents per share, down from 9 cents last year.

Despite Telecom’s downgraded outlook, its shares rose 1.1 percent to a session high of NZ$ 2.23, on optimism that restructuring will help the firm compete with Vodafone, in the broadband market after it bought Telstraclear’s operations last year.

“There’s some anticipation of the restructuring potential coming through,” said Shane Solly, portfolio manager at Mint Asset Management in Auckland.

But he added that Telecom could face a rocky future, adding, “The restructuring announcement will be very influential in how people consider the company going forward.”

Earlier this week Telecom said it would join Vodafone and Australia’s Telstra to build a submarine cable between New Zealand and Australia, offering increased capacity and speeds.

Cuban dissident blogger inflames splits in Brazil’s Congress

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Cold War politics appeared to take over Brazil‘s Congress on Wednesday during a visit by Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez, with leftists heckling her as a pawn of U.S. imperialism and others praising her for standing up to Cuba‘s communist government.

Sanchez, Cuba’s best-known dissident, has been followed by boisterous sympathizers of the Cuban government since she arrived in Brazil on Monday on her first trip abroad since receiving a passport to leave the Caribbean island.

After the screening of a documentary about Cuba that she was due to attend in northeastern Brazil was disrupted by demonstrators, Brazilian opposition politicians invited Sanchez to the capital Brasilia for a showing of the documentary in Congress.

But her visit ended up exposing entrenched political divides in Brazil reminiscent of the Cold War, with those on the left hailing Cuba as a victim of U.S. aggression against communism while others praised Sanchez for fighting against political repression on the island.

“Mercenary, go to Disney,” shouted those opposed to her visit, repeating the Cuban government’s view that all dissidents on the island are on the payroll of its ideological archenemy, the United States.

“Down with the dictatorship,” yelled sympathizers who welcomed the blogger.

Sanchez, 37, was shielded from the protesters by congressional and Senate leaders of Brazil’s main opposition party, the PSDB, led by feisty Senator Alvaro Dias.

Dias has called on members of the ruling Workers’ Party and the Cuban ambassador to explain to Congress media allegations that the Cuban embassy in Brasilia has spied on Sanchez and distributed a “dossier” on the blogger as part of carefully orchestrated smear campaign.

An unperturbed Sanchez visited a committee room to see parts of the documentary, titled “Cuba-Honduras Connection,” that she had not been able to attend on Monday in Bahia state. The screening of the film, in which she is featured, was the main reason for her trip to Brazil in the first place.

“I dream of the day when we Cubans can express ourselves freely, and have a legislature where all opinions can be heard,” Sanchez told reporters. “The legislature of my country has a sad record. It has never said ‘no’ to any law proposed by the government.”

Sanchez’s visit touched a political nerve in Brazil, where the left-leaning government of President Dilma Rousseff is often criticized for not taking a more critical stance against Cuba’s one-party system and the repression of political dissent there. ID:nL1N0BJ08I]

Sanchez has won several international prizes for blogging about life in Cuba but has been unable to collect them until now. She began a whirlwind 80-day international tour on Sunday after she was granted a passport two weeks ago under Cuba’s sweeping immigration reform that went into effect this year.

In Brazil, Sanchez praised recent reforms undertaken by Cuban President Raul Castro but said they were too little.

Burger King takes down Twitter account after hack attack

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Hackers breached the Twitter account of fast-food chain Burger King, posting the online equivalent of graffiti and sometimes making little sense.

Burger King Worldwide Inc suspended its Twitter account about an hour after it learned of the attack at 12:24 p.m. EST on Monday, company spokesman Bryson Thornton said in an email.

“It has come to our attention that the Twitter account of the BURGER KING® brand has been hacked,” the company said in a statement. “We have worked directly with administrators to suspend the account until we are able to re-establish our legitimate site and authentic postings.”

Several tweets carried the logo of Burger King’s larger rival McDonald’s, but spelled the latter company’s name incorrectly. Others sought to tarnish Burger King, the third-largest U.S. hamburger chain, and its employees.

“Just got sold to McDonalds,” one tweet said, adding “FREDOM IS FAILURE”.

Play puts Russian justice system in dock over lawyer’s death

MOSCOW (Reuters) – In a poorly lit basement theatre in central Moscow, actors play out a symbolic trial of Russia‘s justice system over its failure to protect an anti-corruption lawyer who died in custody.

Without costumes or a set, the actors in “One Hour and Eighteen Minutes” take on the roles of judges, an investigator, doctor and medical assistants, reciting lines cobbled together from legal documents, media and public pronouncements on the case of Sergei Magnitsky.

His death in 2009, while awaiting trial on charges of tax evasion and fraud, has outraged human rights campaigners who see it as an example of arbitrary justice in Russia, and contributed to a rift in U.S.-Russian relations.

A nervous giggle runs through the audience, perched on wooden chairs and benches, when an actor playing a judge says that the justice system is the only thing that is still working in Russia.

The audience is visibly taken aback when a second judge, who prolonged Magnitsky‘s detention four days before his death, dismisses accusations of acting inhumanly when she says the judge’s role is not to act like a human being but as an executor of the state’s authority.

“The most horrifying moment for me was this judge saying she is not a human because she is a judge. This is very frankly put and how things really are,” said Lyudmila Alexeyeva, a veteran Russian human rights campaigner.

“Nowadays, theatre based on documents, on real life here, is more telling and, unfortunately, more scary than thrillers.”

No one has been convicted over the death of Magnitsky, who was arrested after accusing Russian police of stealing $ 230 million from the state in 2007 through fraudulent tax refunds.

But Russia is now pressing ahead with plans to stage a posthumous trial of the lawyer, putting a dead man in the dock.

This prompted Mikhail Ugarov, the director of Teatr.doc, to revive a play first staged in 2010 because it seemed to him that true justice was now more distant than ever.

“In the very heart of Russia a man is killed, and not by thieves and bandits, but by doctors and prison workers, people who are in general obliged to safeguard the lives of those arrested,” Ugarov told Reuters.

“We used to think there would at least be some justice done, but it turned out completely the other way, it went horribly wrong. So our logic was that if they were not able to give justice to Magnitsky, we will instead.”

SEEKING JUSTICE

Rights campaigners and critics of President Vladimir Putin say the Russian judiciary is weak and open to abuse by politicians, and suggest that the Kremlin uses it to intimidate or persecute adversaries.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied those accusations, saying the judiciary is completely independent and that the government does not intervene in legal cases.

“Judges are independent and subject only to the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the federal law,” the Russian Justice Ministry said in response to a request to comment on the play.

The Kremlin also denies that there has been a crackdown on dissenters since Putin returned to the presidency last May, facing the largest protests since he first rose to power 13 years ago.

Magnitsky’s prison death has, however, damaged Russia’s image and, for critics of the Kremlin, come to symbolize what they see as the impunity of the Russian authorities and the dangers faced by those who challenge them.

It has also resulted in a political spat with Washington. The United States, in response to Magnitsky’s treatment, passed legislation late last year that is designed to punish officials linked to his case as well as other Russians deemed rights violators.

Russia hit back with a law to punish Americans it suspects of similar abuses.

The play’s title, “One Hour and Eighteen Minutes”, alludes to the time just before Magnitsky died when he was left without medical help in his cell despite repeated complaints about his health deteriorating while in custody.

Putin said in December that Magnitsky died of a heart attack, but the head of the Kremlin’s own human rights council had earlier said he was probably beaten to death.

Putin called the death a tragedy but said the late lawyer, who had two sons, was not tortured.

All the defendants in the symbolic court in the play deny any responsibility, saying it was not their job to help Magnitsky, that they were busy with other cases, or were paid too poorly to care. Some suggest he was asking for trouble.

In the play, the first judge at a pre-trial hearing denies a glass of water to Magnitsky, saying such requests are not his concern.

Later on, an investigator involved in the case laughs with contempt at the lawyer’s repeated complaints about the conditions of Magnitsky’s detention and lack of medical care, saying a prison is not meant to be comfortable.

One actor exclaims ironically: “A dead man is good for being tried, and should be, just like someone who is alive – or is even better for being tried.”

BlackBerry Z10 not seen as a success, BlackBerry’s services business again called into question

BlackBerry (BBRY) shares continued down on Thursday morning after a research note from Wednesday evening called the company’s comeback prospects into question once again. In a note to investors picked up by Barron’s, National Bank Financial analyst Kris Thompson cut his revenue and profit forecast for BlackBerry’s upcoming fiscal year while casting doubt on its prospects with the BlackBerry Z10 in light of what he calls a delayed U.S. launch.

[More from BGR: Huge iPhone security vulnerability discovered in iOS 6.1 [video]]

“For the record, we like the Z10. It’s a great upgrade for BlackBerry subscribers,” Thompson wrote. “But we don’t see the product reversing BlackBerry’s market share decline; only providing a short-term stabilization from BB6/7 upgrades. We do not expect the platform to win over many iOS or Android users. The apps just aren’t there; and apps are not moving to the web browser soon enough to fill this void.”

[More from BGR: Samsung reportedly plans to sell 100M Galaxy S IV phones, could pull resources away from Apple]

He continued, “Z10 product launch delay an ominous sign. The bulls will say that the Z10 launched in Canada and the UK first because those are very loyal bases, production runs couldn’t support the U.S. launch, or kinks can be worked out ahead of the U.S. launch. We’d say the U.S. carriers have enough smartphones that they test new ones to their own drum beat and aren’t too interested in paying the monthly BlackBerry subscriber fee.”

Elaborating on his comment regarding BlackBerry’s services business, Thompson went on to paint a dark picture of BlackBerry’s earnings moving forward.

“The product delays do not have a major impact on our estimates (although sell-through may be worse than expected given the multitude of competing devices that will now launch at the same time),” he wrote. “Our prelim F2015 estimates suggest earnings will worsen as the high-margin service revenue is subject to a significant decline as the install base dumps BB7 (and predecessor) handsets and adopt BB10 handsets.”

Thompson noted that since BlackBerry executives have not been forthcoming with details surrounding BlackBerry 10 service fees or legacy fee concessions considering carriers will likely no longer pay fees for non-enterprise users, National Bank Financial has had to make some assumptions.

“Many BB10 users will not pay a monthly fee – we have assumed consumer BB10 subs pay nothing and enterprise (BES10) subs pay $ 3/month (less than half of historical, which is a guess… data plans need to be re-negotiated because the BB10 devices require more data since, for instance, the browser no longer compresses data, which was a major drag on browser performance),” the analyst wrote.

Thompson reiterated his Underperform rating on BlackBerry shares along with his $ 10 price target.

Google hits back against BT with patent lawsuits

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Google Inc and its Motorola Mobility unit struck back on Wednesday against BT Group Plc, filing patent lawsuits against the British telecommunications group more than a year after BT launched its own lawsuit against Google.

BT, Britain’s dominant fixed-line telecoms group, sued Google in 2011 over six patents related to mobile technology. But in a lawsuit filed on Wednesday in a California federal court, Google asserted four patents of its own.

Google spokeswoman Niki Fenwick said the company also filed a separate lawsuit against BT in a U.K. court.

“We have always seen litigation as a last resort, and we work hard to avoid lawsuits,” Fenwick said in an email. “But BT has brought several meritless patent claims against Google and our customers – and they’ve also been arming patent trolls.”

A BT representative said the company does not comment on pending litigation.

BT has accused Google of infringing BT’s mobile patents through numerous products, including the Android mobile platform, Gmail email service and Google Maps. That lawsuit is still pending in a Delaware federal court.

In addition, Google was sued in a Virginia federal court by Suffolk Technologies LLC and one of the patents being asserted by Suffolk was previously owned by BT, according to court filings. A Suffolk attorney declined to comment.

In Google’s U.S. lawsuit, the company said BT violates Google patents that cover technology such as networking and making phone calls over the Internet. Google obtained at least one of the patents in its lawsuit from International Business Machines Corp in 2010, according to a government database.

IBM representatives could not immediately be reached.

The case in U.S. District Court, Central District of California is Google Inc v. BT Americas Inc, BT Conferencing Inc, BT Ins Inc and Ipanema Technologies Corporation.

Does the Sold-Out Surface Pro Mean Microsoft is Beating the IPad?

The first Surface RT tablets were extremely limited. They could only run apps specifically written for Windows 8, and only used the classic “desktop” mode to run Microsoft Office. The new Surface Pro tablets, on the other hand, can run “normal” Windows games and apps, and the premium 128 GB model is widely reported to have sold out both online and in brick-and-mortar stores.

According to Business Insider’s Steve Kovach, however, not that many were made to begin with. And while Windows enthusiast Paul Thurrott says people at Microsoft Store locations are reporting “Apple-like” lines, the writer of the Virtual Pants blog notes that his store sold out in 15 minutes, “which means there wasn’t much to sell.”

With that and the continued dominance of Apple‘s iPad tablet in mind, where does Microsoft now stand in its attempt to turn things around from the “post-PC era” into the “PC plus” era?

Apple’s still winning on apps

The iPad now has hundreds of thousands of games and apps available for it. Windows 8 now has 40,000, according to PCWorld’s Brad Chacos, but the rate at which new games and apps are added to the Windows Store has slowed to a near standstill.

Surface Pro’s Windows apps come at a price

Surface Pro’s ability to run old Windows software in the classic desktop significantly adds to the number of apps available for it. Reviewers note, however, the trade-offs Microsoft had to make in order to make this happen, including an increased price tag, thicker and heavier design, and lower battery life.

Apple’s still ahead in profit share

According to All Things D’s John Paczkowski, a report by analyst Tavis McCourt shows Apple taking 77 percent of the combined smartphone and tablet industry’s operating profits, on top of 43 percent of the revenue. So almost one in every two smartphone- and tablet-buying dollars (or other denominations of money) is spent to buy Apple products, and the company takes three of every four dollars in those markets after expenses.

Apple is now on top of the PC market

If you count the iPad along with notebook and desktop computers — like how most people count netbooks, even though they’re smaller, cheaper, and in many ways less capable than the iPad — Apple sold almost as many last quarter as PC titans HP and Lenovo combined, according to Canalys. The two would otherwise have been on top of the market.

Sold-out Surface a start?

Whether you look at it in comparison with Apple or not, Microsoft has successfully demonstrated that there’s demand for high-end, Windows-compatible tablets, which cost as much as an ultrabook or MacBook Air when the Touch Cover is factored in.

One thing to keep in mind, though: Since it’s been widely publicized that the slightly-lower-end 64 GB Surface Pro only has 23 GB of actual usable space, the sales of 128 GB Surface Pro tablets may also reflect a belief that the 64 GB model doesn’t have enough space for the classic Windows games and apps people want to put on them.
